If the natural unfolding of labour and birth has been disturbed, especially if there has not been a medical emergency there is a risk that the side-effects of the intervention will make further intervention necessary. This is known as a “cascade of intervention” Many women on looking back over what happened during their baby’s birth realise that this is what has happened to them and that it may have been avoidable.
